Reflecting and reverberating from one side of the underpass to the other are Land and River, two distinct and interrelated artworks. On Tuesday, a crew from Green Mountain Power was working to install electricity, while Elizabeth Billings, Andrea Wasserman, and Nell Gwin were preparing to mount the river representation under the bridge. This is a site-specific public art installation that makes connections between the White River, the town, and the surrounding landscape. Another important part of the project was the lighting element, made possible by an AARP “Community Challenge” grant encouraging walk-ability. This opportunity to bring artwork to the 6th Street Underpass dramatically changes the experience and invites people to encounter art in unexpected places. The feedback from the public both during the painting and after has been incredible, as they feel it has really improved the area, and has made the space more desirable to use. From the winning design entry, the final realisation was made, including the vision and input also of artist Humble Cherub, who would be completing the final painting.
